Had a chat with Pennant tonight for a good twenty minutes. He said he has supported us as a boy and playing for us was the best thing he has ever done.
I mentioned his performance against derby and his chelsea goal and he was absolutely flattered. I asked him how it felt to play so well in the cl final and he said that rafa told him it was an ordinary game and told him exactly what to do and he felt no nerves, he said he didn't realise until he read the papers the next day how big a game it was. He said all he remembers was Masch marking Kaka out of the game and he was not surprised because Rafa had told Masch exactly what to do.
He also said that no one really realises how old our best players really are. He said our best players and our manager are ahead of their time.
He absolutely loved the banter with the likes of crouch and kuyt. He said kuyt was insane and probably the fittest player in the league. He said Babel was like him in a way in that he tried to become the player rafa wanted but didnt have the defensive instincts.
He felt no bitterness and said rafa wanted perfection and that what he desired needed special players, players that were ultra fit and a little bit out of the ordinary. He said Rafa likes players who are mentally fit and physically fit and know how to react to any given situation.
He said rafa was like a robot and did not speak to the players at all but he also said that everyone wanted to prove themselves, he said he couldnt explain it but rafa had a presence, something likeable that made them want to win for him. He said that he wanted to be part of what Rafa was doing but he also said that he knew better players would come in and take his place.
He also said that he thought Rafa would win everything with us for years to come. He felt like Rafa was a bit out of the ordinary, he said the players didnt know what to make of him but they knew what he told them was what would make them win.
I cannot emphasise enough how much he loves us. He said he asked to play every single reserve game when he wasnt starting for us. He also said he had a bit of banter with an interviewer after a reserve game and said he didnt need to play becuase he had played in a cl final. He said it was a joke and he was having banter with the guy who was doing the report but they only quoted him on that comment. he still follows us and watches all of our games. He had the best moment s of his life with us and said he holds no regrets whatseover. He wishes he could have been a regular but admitted that sometimes it is not meant to be.
He said rafa is a freak in that he knows exactly what any other manager is thinking and he thinks we will win the double.
He also said that Carra and Gerrard have an inredible amount of input and a huge say on what goes on.
I really enjoyed speaking to him, he was really honest and absolutely loves us and has no regrets whatsoever, he said he knew rafa wanted a different option but he could never walk away.
I asked him about his plans in the summer and he said he would not say anything as the papers will pick up on it.
p.s i am smashed but i thought i would share it with you lot
